The “Treadmill Test,” also known as a stress test or exercise test, is a diagnostic procedure aimed at assessing the function and health of the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart. This non-invasive procedure involves monitoring the heart’s response to physical exertion, typically through walking or running on a treadmill, although stationary bicycles or other exercise equipment may also be used.

During a treadmill test, the patient is connected to various monitoring devices such as an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) machine, blood pressure cuff, and pulse oximeter. These devices continuously record important cardiovascular parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels throughout the test.

The test begins with the patient walking on the treadmill at a slow pace, which gradually increases in speed and incline over time, simulating the stress experienced during physical activity. The goal is to elevate the heart rate to a predetermined target level based on the patient’s age, physical condition, and medical history. Throughout the test, the patient’s symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue, are closely monitored and reported to the healthcare provider conducting the test.

The treadmill test serves several purposes in cardiovascular medicine. It can help diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD) by detecting abnormal changes in the heart’s electrical activity or blood flow to the heart muscle during exertion. Additionally, it can evaluate the effectiveness of treatment interventions, assess exercise tolerance and fitness levels, and determine an appropriate exercise prescription for cardiac rehabilitation programs.
